Freshman Summer Reading

Sophomore Summer Reading

Why Summer Reading?

Freshman and sophomores are required to complete a summer reading assignment.  This assignment accomplishes at least two things -- both of which lead to student success.

First, summer reading assignments encourage "institutional fit."  It is important that students understand the college's Christian perspective on learning and life.  This Reformed perspective is presented in both of the summer reading books - Engaging God's World and God at Work.  By requiring freshmen students to read this book over the summer, they are better prepared to understand Providence's vision and purpose for higher education - before they get to college, they already have read about a Christian worldview, Creation-Fall-Redemption, Sovereignty of God ("every square inch"), and a distinctly Reformed view of education.  Before the sophomore year, studentsare asked to read a book that deals with a Reformed perspective on calling.  This is vital as sophomores are beginning to choose their majors and explore where and how God is going to use them after college.

Second, summer reading assignments build community.  An essential part of the college experience is participation in a community of discourse and discussion.  One way that this is accomplished is through common academic experiences.  When students all read the same book, they can all contribute to this academic community.  Summer reading assignments contribute the academic experience through the summer and keep students connected to the Providence community when they are away from campus.

Juniors and seniors may be required to complete a summer reading assignment, as directed by the professors in their chosen major.
