Spiritual Life

The college years can be times of amazing spiritual, intellectual, and personal growth, as students become more independent. Unfortunately, these years can also come with increased temptations and spiritual confusion. At Providence, it is our goal to provide a spiritual life program that focuses on God and His word.

A faithful disciple of Christ must be "firmly grounded" in scripture. This is something that has been neglected in Christian churches and Christian colleges.  Providence recognizes that in order to look at all of life through the "spectacles of scripture," one needs to know the scriptures. It is as simple as that.  A Providence education will provide the student with a working knowledge of the entire Bible ... a biblical literacy.

Although all areas of life are "spiritual life," Providence focuses on the following areas to strengthen the student's relationship with God: Bible Studies, CARE groups, Chapel, and Church. Each of these areas work in tandem with the Bible requirements in the Core curriculum to provide a firm foundation for a Christian life.

Bible Studies
Bible studies led by students and faculty/staff will be organized for resident and commuter students. The Spiritual Life Committee of the Student Senate will oversee the implementation of these studies. There will be opportunities for Residence Hall Bible studies as well.

CARE Groups
Covenant, Accountability, Responsibility, and Encouragement—each year CARE groups are made up of a faculty/staff leader, a student leader, and students from all classes. CARE groups meet every other Wednesday during chapel. The purpose of these groups is to study the Bible, pray for each other, and grow close to each other and to God.

Chapel
Chapel at Providence is a special time when the entire community puts aside all it is doing and comes together to worship and fellowship as a body. Chapels are Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:45am-11:30am. Chapel speakers will vary from faculty and staff members to local pastors and community members. Chapels will consist of times of singing, communal prayer, and sharing of the Word. Learn more...

Church
So often students lose connection with a church during their college years. While they might attend church every Sunday, they often just go to the worship service and walk right to their car afterwards. And many go from one church to the next, week after week, all four years. Being an active member in a congregation is so important. For this reason, Providence students must seek out a local church for regular worship, spiritual oversight, hospitality, and encouragement. Learn more...
