History Department

This department exists to prepare students to serve in a variety of callings by nurturing a community of learners characterized by historical consciousness, critical interpretative skills, and an integral Christian perspective.

History is the story of human development of creation, discerned through critical examination of surviving evidence of past actions (stories, texts, artifacts, and environmental impact) and interpreted in light of the historian's fundamental worldview commitments. From a Christian perspective, ultimate narrative that gives all other narratives meaning is the story of creation, fall, redemption, and final consummation. The history department seeks to instill in students an abiding curiosity in all aspects of human experience and a desire to arrive at deeper understanding of cultural development, human interconectedness, and the dynamic interplay of continuity and change.

A major in History will equip you for:

Teaching, research, graduate and professional (including law and divinity) school, government service, and any field that requires higher-level thinking, analysis , and breadth of perspective.

"The Reformed perspective shapes my worldview, which is the lens I use to study history.

I am able to see how God has worked in all areas of history, and that He uses what I see as terrible or good for His glory."
