FAQ on housing

Q. How many resident halls are there?
A. Providence has 3 resident halls:
            ·        Hesed Hall— houses female students, both freshmen and upperclassmen
            ·        Emet Hall— houses female upperclassmen
            ·        East Hall— houses all male students.

Q. How many roommates will I have?
A. Anywhere from 1 to 5, depending on the size of the room.

Q. Are there community bathrooms?
A. Yes. In East Hall each wing has a bathroom with toilets and showers in them. Hesed Hall has a shower room with five showers and then separate bathrooms with toilets, sinks, and mirrors in them. Emet Hall has two large bathrooms with a shower room in between.

Q. What furniture is provided?
A. Each student gets a bed (bunk beds with extra long twin mattresses), desk, chair, and wardrobe.

Q. What size sheets do we need?
A. The mattresses are extra-long twins.

Q. Are there phones jacks in the rooms?
A. Each room has one phone jack. The students need to provide their own phone and if they have a cordless phone it must be 5.8 GHz in order to not interfere with our wireless campus.

Q. Can we bring a TV?
A. Yes. Students are more than welcome to bring a TV. There is connection to an antenna, but no cable. There are TVs in the Hesed lounge and Emet lounge with a VCR and/or DVD player for students to use.

Q. Is there a laundry room in the dorm?
A. Yes. Each dorm is equipped with a laundry room (in Emet washers & dryers are located in the bathrooms). You may use the washers and dryers for free. There is also an iron and ironing board in each laundry room.

Q. What are we allowed/not allowed to bring?
A. Each room may have one refrigerator (no larger than 4 cubic feet). You are allowed to have a coffee pot and hot pot in your room. Microwaves, toasters, and popcorn poppers are not allowed in the dorm as they take up a lot of energy and are a fire hazard. You are allowed to have candles in your room as decorations, but are not allowed to light them.

Q. Can I decorate my room?
A. Yes, students are encouraged to make their room their “home” by decorating and arranging it how they like it. You may hang things on the walls with sticky tack, adhesive tape, or anything that when removed will not take off paint or leave a hole or mark in the wall. Obviously roommates must decide together how they want to decorate their room and nothing should be hung that would be offensive to others.

Q. May I store my things over the summer?
A. Each student who has handed in a housing deposit for the following year is allowed two plastic storage tubs to store over the summer. Items stored must be in a plastic tub no bigger than 30 gallons. A student may replace one of his/her tub with a bookshelf or like item. More information on summer storage will be handed out by the Resident Life Staff towards the end of the school year.
