Accreditation Liaison Officer

Mary Ellen Godfrey has been active in the development of Providence Christian College since becoming a board member in 2003. Subsequently, she served as a member of the Academic Affairs Committee and as interim academic dean. With the appointment of Dr. Russ Reeves as the full-time academic dean, Mrs. Godfrey has taken on the role of associate academic dean/accreditation liaison officer with advancing the accreditation process as one of her primary duties.

“Planting a Christian liberal arts college in the West is an exciting adventure,” she says. “The idea of liberal arts comes from the ancient conviction that education is liberating. This is especially true for Christians.”  Mrs. Godfrey’s own liberal arts education includes a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University and a master’s degree in the same subject from Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to coming to Providence, Mrs. Godfrey taught high school history for 25 years in both public and Christian schools as well as at the college level. She retired from full-time teaching in June 2004 after fourteen years of teaching American history, church history, and government at Calvin Christian High School in Escondido, California. Mrs. Godfrey has also been a writer, editor, and educational consultant, and has taught courses in academic writing at Westminster Seminary where her husband, Bob, is professor of church history and president.

The Godfreys live in Escondido, California where they are active in the life of Escondido United Reformed Church. The entire Godfrey family has close ties with Westminster Seminary California. Son Robert has completed his Masters of Divinity and is serving a church. His brother, William, is in his second year of the M.Div. program after six years of practicing law. Their daughter, Mari, teaches first grade, and her husband, Mark MacVey is an alumnus of the seminary and currently director of admission.
